How To Perform Effective Hopper Maintenance

Performing regular hopper maintenance is crucial for keeping your shop running smoothly and saving money in the long term. By recognizing early warning signs of hopper issues and knowing how to address them, you can prevent costly downtime and ensure everything operates efficiently.

Keep Your Powder Coating Hopper in Top Shape

Regular maintenance allows for a properly fluidizing hopper - which is essential when coating. A hopper that is fluidizing correctly will have a smooth, even flow, like a calm sea. If it looks choppy or has rat holes, it might be having problems. Being able to recognize and attend to issues with fluidization will make applying powder significantly easier.

Here are some common issues and what to check:

  1. Powder Isn’t Flowing:

    • Check Air Pressure: Make sure there’s enough air pressure (PSI) to lift the powder in the hopper.
    • Inspect the Fluid Membrane: It might be clogged on the bottom of the membrane. If there’s oil or fine powder on it, clean it carefully (Note: Overly fine powder can have a similar effect on the top of the plate). Avoid using strong solvents like acetone, which are known to melt plastics and can damage the plate. Vacuum the plate first and then clean it with a mild cleaner like Simple Green, thoroughly rinse well, and let it dry. Check for cracks; if there are any, or if cleaning doesn’t help, replace the membrane.
  2. Air or Powder Leaks:

    • Check Air Pressure: Too much air pressure can cause leaks. Reduce it if necessary.
    • Inspect for Overfilled Hopper: Too much powder can also cause leaks.
    • Look for Leaks Around the Hopper: Leakage around the base of the hopper can be due to a clogged membrane or faulty gasket. Check the air fitting and airline for leaks, and replace any damaged parts. Spraying water around the hopper base can help find leaks.
  3. Problems with Venturi Pumps and Adapters:

    • Check O-Rings: Make sure they are not cracked, creased, or damaged; replace any that are.
    • Inspect Airlines and Fittings: Ensure they’re sealing properly. Cut back any damaged airlines and replace faulty fittings.
    • Clean the Pump: Clean out the pump by removing any clogs and replace worn-out venturi sleeves. Also, check and replace any damaged adapter down tubes.

By doing regular maintenance and checking these issues, your hopper will provide the best powder flow and keep everything running smoothly.
